Acne calcified scars: Case report

Introduction: The involvement of calcium regulatory factors in the epithelial tissue can result in calcification or cutaneous ossification. The secondary osteomas, wherein the calcification develops in a preexisting skin lesions such as acne, for example, are the most common.

Objective: To report a case of calcification/ossification of soft tissues compat- ible with acne scarring.

Case report: Panoramic panoramic radiographic examination revealed radiopaque, circular image in the alveolar ridge region in the air corresponding to tooth 36, with residual root characteristics . The alteration in the diagnostic hypothesis occurred after periapical radiography, which revealed a displacement of the radiopaque image to the upper region of the border, confirmed by another radiograph with a film placed in the position between the vestibular face of the alveolar border and the mucosa of the cheek.

Conclusion: The radiographic findings associated with anamnesis and clini- cal examination suggested a diagnosis ofcalcification/ossification in soft tissue compatible with the healing of acne.

Assessment of image quality and exposure parameters of an intraoral portable X-rays device

Portable X-ray devices are increasingly available for use in the dental clinic market. These devices were first designed for military missions, and later deployed to the forensic area and dental care of patients with limited mobility.

The DIOX® (Micro Imaging, Brazil) intraoral portable X-ray device is appropriate for intraoral radi- ography with conventional film or digital sensors for adult and pediatric applications. It can be handled by professionals in the health field, trained dentists and dental technicians. According to the manufacturer, this device is in compliance with the ABNT NBR IEC 60601 standards and it is certified by ANVISA (National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance). This kind of device is particularly useful in the many countries and remote areas, where its use is mandatory around the world, to permit XR examinations.

Reproducibility of cone-beam computed tomographic measurements of bone plates and the interdental septum in the anterior mandible

Purpose: This study aimed to introduce a novel method to evaluate the alveolar bone and interdental septum in the anterior mandible using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Materials and Methods: Fifty-six CBCT scans from adult patients were selected. The CBCT scans were obtained before and after orthodontic treatment. The following measurements were taken: width of the alveolar bone and the interdental septum, height of the interdental septum, height of the bone plates, distance between the cementoenamel junction and marginal bone crests, and vertical positioning of the mandibular incisor, using the lingual plane as a reference. To test the reproducibility and the stability of the lingual plane, a triangle was traced in the anterior mandible. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to determine intra- and inter-examiner agreement. The paired Student t-test was used to evaluate the area of the triangle and the reproducibility of all measurements.
Results: The ICC was excellent for the alveolar bone and dental measurements (0.9989 and 0.9977, respectively), as well as for the interdental septum (0.9987 and 0.9961, respectively). The area of the triangles showed stability in the lingual plane (P> 0.05). For the alveolar bone, mandibular incisor, and interdental septum measurements, no statistically significant differences were found between the 2 examiners (P> 0.05), confirming the technical reliability of the measurements.

Sialolito de Grandes Dimensões no Ducto da Glândula Submandibular: Relato de Caso

As glândulas salivares, principalmente as maiores, frequentemente apresentam-se obstruídas por estruturas calcificadas, denominadas sialolitos. Estes podem ser encontrados no interior da glândula ou em seu ducto excretor, sendo o local de maior ocorrência, o ducto da glândula submandibular. O diagnóstico pode ser obtido por meio da realização de manobras semiológicas tais como, palpação, inspeção e ordenha da glândula.

Os resultados são geralmente confirmados por meio de exames de imagem, dos quais, destacam-se as radiografias oclu- sal total de mandíbula, panorâmica e tomografia computadorizada. O tratamento pode variar, desde a simples estimulação salivar, até a remoção cirúrgica do sialolito e da glândula envolvida. Objetiva-se com este trabalho realizar revisão de literatura a respeito do tema, bem como relatar o caso clínico de um sialolito de dimensões aumentadas no ducto da glân- dula submandibular, que foi removido cirurgicamente. Além de destacar as diversas opções de diagnóstico e tratamento disponíveis, e de descrever os aspectos mais relevantes na prática clínica.
